Frequently Asked Questions for CPAP Masks

What are the different types of CPAP masks?

At Saskatoon CPAP Services, we offer all 5 categories of CPAP masks on the market. Based on fit, these are: Minimalist, Freedom, Universal, Ultrasoft and Legacy.

Some CPAP masks rest over your nose and mouth with the assistance of headgear, while others are less prominent, covering your nose to deliver air directly through your nasal passages. Each mask has its own benefits and uses, so finding the best fit for you is easy.

How often should you replace your CPAP mask?

Your CPAP mask should be replaced between 3-6 months. To get the most out of your CPAP therapy, it's essential that you maintain all CPAP supplies properly. This also includes your hose, cushion, filters and headgear, which need to be replaced more regularly

Are all CPAP masks interchangeable?

No. All CPAP masks offered online and in-store are compatible with any CPAP Machine, including the AirSense™ 10 APAP System and the AirSense™ 10 AutoSet For Her System. The only exception is the ResMed AirMini which can only be used with the ResMed AirFit P10, N20, F30 and F20 and the ResMed AIrTouch F20.

How often should you clean CPAP mask and hose?

It’s important to clean your CPAP mask and hose daily with warm, soapy water. Residues and oils from your skin can accumulate in and around your mask if you don’t clean it after each use. Maintaining a clean CPAP mask will allow you to gain the best results of your Sleep therapy while also optimizing the lifespan of your equipment.

How to size a CPAP mask?

There are many different CPAP mask options available, so ensuring the mask is properly sized is important for treating your sleep apnea. Your mask should feel snug, but not too tight, as it can cause leaking. Below are resources to reference when sizing your mask for optimal comfort.

How do I stop the CPAP mask from leaking?

If your CPAP mask is leaking, first ensure that your mask is clean.  If you have the proper sizing ensure your mask is not too tight or too loose. Readjust your headgear while making sure your cushion is properly set and your mask is balanced on your face. Remember that a broken CPAP mask can also cause leaking due to cracks in different areas of the cushion or tubing, allowing the pressurized air to leak. If you’re continuing to have leakage you may need to replace your mask or cushion.

Frequently Asked Questions for CPAP Machines

How does a CPAP machine work?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) causes breathing disruptions during sleep. More specifically, sleep apnea occurs when the airway at the back of your throat becomes relaxed to the point where air movement is restricted or blocked. CPAP machines prevent this blockage from occurring by providing a steady flow of pressurized air. This pressurized air is delivered through a hose and mask into the airway during sleep, allowing the CPAP user to get the many benefits of sleep therapy.

How do you clean a CPAP machine?

Cleaning your CPAP machine and equipment is simple and only takes around 5 minutes. First, be sure to unplug your CPAP machine from the power source and disconnect the mask and air tubing from the CPAP machine. Use a lightly dampened cloth to dust off your CPAP machine. Clean your mask, cushion, tubing and headgear with soapy, warm water in a sink or tub. Please avoid using stronger cleaning products and leaving the equipment in direct sunlight, as this can damage the mask or cause harmful residue. Rinse all washed equipment thoroughly with clean running water.

How often should my machine be cleaned?

The tubing, mask and humidifier tub should be cleaned a minimum of 1 time per week to properly treat sleep apnea and get the most out of your sleep therapy. Clients should consider cleaning their cushion on their mask daily.

Are CPAP machines safe?

Yes, using a CPAP machine is a safe method of treating sleep apnea. While there are known side effects, many can be reduced by finding the right mask and fit as well as using certain comfort features.

Can you buy CPAP machines online?

Absolutely. At Saskatoon CPAP services, we offer a wide range of CPAP machines, masks and accessories. We offer both shipping and curb-side pickup for all products.

Can I adjust my own machine?

You may have the urge to adjust your CPAP machine out of discomfort. It's important to find the right pressure settings while adjusting to sleep therapy.

Pressure settings are different for all patients. If your pressure is prescribed by a Physician you should not change settings without advice. There are comfort settings that can be added typically with professional advice. Many people can experience difficulties when initializing treatment but with consistent usage they adjust well to therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions for CPAP Accessories

How do you use a chin strap with a CPAP mask?

A chin strap can be effective for CPAP users who have difficulty with mouth their opening. The strap works to hold the jaw and help keep the mouth closed. This may  prevent a dry mouth or a sore throat after sleeping. Make sure that your chin strap is properly adjusted to your head to get optimal results.

How do I clean my CPAP hose?

Disconnect the hose from your mask and CPAP machine, then wash the inside and outside of the air tubing with mild soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly with clean running water.

Why is my CPAP hose gurgling?

Gurgling occurs when the air travelling through the hose of your CPAP device is warmer than the temperature of your room. The air cools and forms a build-up of condensation. You can prevent this by increasing the temperature of your heated hose. If you do not have a heated hose you could decrease the level on your humidifier but you will also decrease humidity for therapy. Optimizing the temperature of your room ay help somewhat.

How to change the filter of my CPAP Machine?

CPAP filters can be changed as often as one time per month. The location of the filters will depend on the make and model of your CPAP machine. Simply swap out the old filters for a new one. If you have a timer prompt press the reset button to reset the filter timer.

How do I replace my mask cushion?

The cushions on your CPAP mask should be replaced every 3 months. This also includes nasal cushions. Replacing your mask cushion is very easy, however; the placement(method) depends on which type of mask you have. We offer mask cushions for purchase online and in-store.
