Frequently Asked Questions for CPAP Machines

How does a CPAP machine work?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) causes breathing disruptions during sleep. More specifically, sleep apnea occurs when the airway at the back of your throat becomes relaxed to the point where air movement is restricted or blocked. CPAP machines prevent this blockage from occurring by providing a steady flow of pressurized air. This pressurized air is delivered through a hose and mask into the airway during sleep, allowing the CPAP user to get the many benefits of sleep therapy.

How do you clean a CPAP machine?

Cleaning your CPAP machine and equipment is simple and only takes around 5 minutes. First, be sure to unplug your CPAP machine from the power source and disconnect the mask and air tubing from the CPAP machine. Use a lightly dampened cloth to dust off your CPAP machine. Clean your mask, cushion, tubing and headgear with soapy, warm water in a sink or tub. Please avoid using stronger cleaning products and leaving the equipment in direct sunlight, as this can damage the mask or cause harmful residue. Rinse all washed equipment thoroughly with clean running water.

How often should my machine be cleaned?

The tubing, mask and humidifier tub should be cleaned a minimum of 1 time per week to properly treat sleep apnea and get the most out of your sleep therapy. Clients should consider cleaning their cushion on their mask daily.

Are CPAP machines safe?

Yes, using a CPAP machine is a safe method of treating sleep apnea. While there are known side effects, many can be reduced by finding the right mask and fit as well as using certain comfort features.

Can you buy CPAP machines online?

Absolutely. At Saskatoon CPAP services, we offer a wide range of CPAP machines, masks and accessories. We offer both shipping and curb-side pickup for all products.

Can I adjust my own machine?

You may have the urge to adjust your CPAP machine out of discomfort. It's important to find the right pressure settings while adjusting to sleep therapy.

Pressure settings are different for all patients. If your pressure is prescribed by a Physician you should not change settings without advice. There are comfort settings that can be added typically with professional advice. Many people can experience difficulties when initializing treatment but with consistent usage they adjust well to therapy.
